I have naturally wavy hair but I straighten it, mainly because the waves never really do what I want them to do and end up looking frizzy and out of control. I’m sort of tired of the straight look at the moment – with winter upon us it seems especially drab. I’ve seen a lot of posts on Pinterest with lovely wavy hair that looks like you just came home from the beach – minus the sand in your hair.
I’ve tried a couple different ways to do this. You can use a straightener (believe it or not) or a curling iron. I’ve also tried braiding my hair when it was still wet but that just gives me the 80′s crimping iron look. What worked best for me is a 1 inch barrel curling iron. You can do one of two things. You can actually twirl the hair around the closed iron (without grabbing the hair in the tongs first) or you can grab the hair in the tongs and curl it avoiding the ends. The key is to avoid the ends of your hair (about 1-2 inches from the bottom) so it doesn’t look too “finished.” You can see in the pictures below that I don’t completely wrap it all the way to the end, I just hold the last inch or so straight.
